Why 16 mm instead of a 17 mm belt?
Research by GritShift and Gates confirmed that 16 mm is the optimal width for the Sur Ron and Segway primary drive. The factory motor and jackshaft are not perfectly aligned, so a 17 mm belt tracks to the extreme edge of the flanged pulleys, which accelerates wear and leads to premature failure. The 16 mm GT4 keeps proper clearance to the flanges, and its optimized tooth shape is matched to the specific pulleys on these bikes. The high-torque synchronous design and ethylene elastomer construction are rated for durability, and the belt has been tested on 96V systems and high power output applications.
How do I change the belt on a Sur Ron or Segway?
The rear axle comes out and the four-notch swingarm nut comes loose, so the job normally calls for a 17 mm socket, a ratchet and a breaker bar. GritShift makes the belt change easier with the GritShift Belt Change Multi Tool, a 64 g 7075-T6 tool with a six-point 17 mm wrench on one end and a four-pin swingarm nut wrench on the other, which we sell for the same bikes.
Which Gates GT4 belt do the other e-motos take?
The 16 mm belt is for the Sur Ron Light Bee X, Segway X260, Talaria XXX and E Ride Pro-S, Pro-SS and Pro-SS 2.0, which share the narrower flanged pulley. The E Ride Pro-SR, Pro-SS 3.0 and Pro-SS 4.0 run wider flanged belt sprockets and take the Gates GT4 Power Grip Belt 560-8MGT-20MM, and the Sur Ron Ultra Bee takes the 25 mm Gates GT4 Primary Belt 640-8MR-25MM. All three are Gates PowerGrip GT4 belts made in the USA.
