What bikes does the Heavy Hitter MX Direct Mount Riser fit?
- Universal: any e-moto on a standard mountain bike dual crown fork, with 1 1/8 in motocross handlebars
Why switch to 1 1/8 in moto bars?
Heavy Hitter's argument is practical. Bending a 31.8 mm mountain bike bar mid-ride with no replacement on hand ends the weekend, while 1 1/8 in moto bars are sold at any motorcycle parts counter. The riser repositions the bars directly over the stem, the layout used on motorcycles, which the product page credits with better steering feel, more leverage over the front end and improved ergonomics. The wide clamping area increases bar stiffness and the bike becomes more flickable, especially at low speed.
What has to change on the bike?
Two things. The riser is designed solely for 1 1/8 in dirt bike handlebars, so mountain bike bars will not clamp in it. And the product page requires you to trim your steering tube to the correct length to use this stem, so plan on cutting the steerer during installation.
How do I install the MX riser?
The kit includes a bottom clamp, a top clamp, four M6×25 stainless steel socket-head screws and four M8 stainless steel socket-head screws. You need 5 mm and 6 mm Allen wrenches, a torque wrench and medium-strength (blue) thread locker. The tech sheet torques the M6×25 screws to 8.5 Nm (6.3 ft·lb) and the M8 top clamp screws to 18 Nm (13 ft·lb), and the product page tells you to tighten the four top clamp bolts evenly for consistent torque across all of them. The exploded view, parts list and torque table are in the Heavy Hitter MX Direct Mount Riser tech sheet (PDF).
Prefer to keep 31.8 mm mountain bike bars?
Heavy Hitter makes a separate riser for 31.8 mm bars: the Heavy Hitter 2" Inch Riser Direct Mount Stem 31.8mm Bars, which adds 2 in of rise and has its own specs page.
